Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas), situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, is the authentic location where Jesus Christ was baptised by John the Baptist. Its biblical significance, archaeological remains and enduring tradition of Christian pilgrimage have led to its recognition by major Christian Churches and its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This sacred place is protected, preserved and managed by the Baptism Site Commission, an independent board of trustees appointed by H.M. King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein and chaired by H.R.H. Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad. The Commission works to safeguard the Site’s spiritual character, archaeological heritage and natural wilderness while welcoming pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
