Pre-Jesus Era
Long before the baptism of Jesus, this part of the Jordan Valley was central to the story of the Hebrew people. Moses gazed upon the Promised Land from the heights above these waters. Elijah the Prophet was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire from this very region.
The Baptism
Around 29 AD, Jesus of Nazareth came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. As Jesus emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended like a dove, and a voice from heaven declared: 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'
Anno Domini
Following the baptism, generations of Christians made pilgrimages to this site. Byzantine churches were built here in the 5th and 6th centuries. The Crusaders venerated the site. Centuries later, after the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace treaty, archaeologists began uncovering the ancient ruins.
